Okay, we’re back for week 2 of this blog thing, or as I like to call it: “What’s bothering Vito this week”.
I’ve talked about how the York University campus has inconvenienced me in more ways than one, however, this most recent issue has not only generated from York, but has spread itself to the rest of the GTA. Over the summer, I did a lot of fun things, most of which took place in downtown Toronto. I went to watch the Blue Jays, the TFC, I went to the Fan Expo, and I even went to the CNE. I’m a chicken-shit when it comes to driving downtown, so usually my friends and I will make our way to a subway station, park in one of the lots and take the train the rest of the way down.
Here’s where the problem comes in.
I like to think I’m fairly patient when it comes to the general public. Hell, I’ve been in retail for 6 years, I think I’m practically comatose with people at this point. Nevertheless, I typically tune most people out as everyone is just trying to get from point A to point B, especially on the subway. I try my best to be this way especially when it comes to the unwritten rules of life.
On many of my trips downtown, I’ve noticed many of the younger generations not adhering to the ‘stay to the right of the escalator to stand’ unwritten rule. If you’ve been on an escalator at one point in your life, you’d probably notice that the thing moves, therefore, you have two options. One, you can stand still and allow the stairs to move you up the stairs on their own, or two, you can decide to hit your daily steps goal and move up the stairs. The difference is which side you choose to be on. The general ‘unwritten rule’ is that if you are running late or you wish to be at the top of whatever place the escalator leads to quicker, you move up on the left side. If you wish to stand stationary and stare at your phone blankly or take the time to admire the beautiful foundation work on the ceiling of said establishment, you would naturally move to the right-hand side.
WELL APPARENTLY NO ONE GOT THE MEMO.
You would think that this is common knowledge, but as my former store manager has said countless times before: “the common sense is not common’. Originally, I thought this was just an odd occurrence, but when I started this new semester at Seneca, I noticed that this infectious disease has spread to all outlets of the GTA. I was so passionate about this subject that I ended up creating a PSA about this global crisis. If you, or someone you know has been impacted, feel free to show my PSA to those who need to hear it.
