Halloween has severely changed over the years. From older people going door to door trick or treating for candy, to children being driven around instead of walking for their candy, Halloween is a very different celebration these days. When I was walking with my younger brother, who was trick-or-treating, I noticed how many people drove their children around for candy. Honestly, with gas prices now, it would probably be cheaper to just go to the store for a box of candy instead of driving door to door for it. Back then, when we were growing up (pre-COVID), we all had the fun of going out with our friends trick-or-treating door to door and getting candy. We all would get exercise and socialize with other people on the streets and the people at the houses when we were getting candy. It made us all good communicators back then. In my opinion, Halloween back then was a lot more fun than it is now. Not just because I’m older now and it’s not the same, but because not as many people seem to be interested in giving candy out to children at houses anymore. While walking the street at night with my brother while he was going door to door for candy, I noticed that it was hard to tell which houses were participating and which were not this year. What I mean by that is back then, we could tell by who had extravagant decorations or even just a simple pumpkin outside with their outdoor lights on. But this year, it was like everything was different. No one went out with decorations in my neighbourhood, and people left their porch lights on even if they weren’t participating in trick-or-treating. But the main thing is that back then, even just 5 years ago, Halloween was an all-out celebration that people did, and it seems like people are not celebrating the way they used to. Growing up, the fun of Halloween for me and my friends was being able to go out together dressed up in costumes and getting candy from our neighbours. I just find it upsetting that the new generation will not have the same happy Halloween memories that we had.
