“Dilemma” comes from a Greek term meaning “double proposition”. It’s originally a technical term of logic. Nowadays, we use this term whenever we think it difficult to produce an ideal solution. As I see it, a dilemma can come in two ways: very distinct options, or others that are similar. It may be a tough choice that affects your life in the long term such as relocation. It can be very trivial things such as going to this restaurant or another one.
I can quote some examples:
• For someone who’s diagnosed of certain sickness, he/she may need to decide having an operation or not because the outcome can’t be guaranteed.
• For a married man, his wife may keep asking whom he will save first if both his wife and his mother can’t swim but fall into the water at the same time?!
• A moral conflict exists when available choices or actions violate some moral obligations. I see a moral dilemma is gradually losing its weight in this decade. Sex is one of them.
Sometimes I don’t understand why we people are confused with Yes or No, Right or Wrong, Do or Don’t. Does it indicate that there’s a problem with our community? Are we enjoying too much freedom and therefore get lost?!
Since I’ve made up my mind to resume study life, I must make a choice among the many programs and schools out there to attend. Having started my 1st semester, I’d thought of giving up or carrying on with the next term every now and then. If I choose to pursue further, I certainly need to put in more efforts and accept more challenges. During the past 2 years or so, I often find myself living in a dilemma. No single alternative was perfect. Gladly, I’ve now found my way: focus on learning first. While there’re assignments on which I don’t enjoy working, I’ll treat them as a learning process because nothing learned is a waste. But there surely is NO way to go if we don’t at least give it a try. Every experience can be a value-adding factor to make us stronger and better. In any event, I am thankful to Jesus that I can turn to and rely upon Him at any time!
Life is interesting: When we have the freedom to make a choice, we may get lost. When faced with no alternative, we may still be hesitant. We need the wisdom to move on in the correct path.
