Hey there everyone, this is my first time making a blogpost that’s been widely seen.
It’s been on my mind for a little bit, but I actually got into broadcasting from voice acting! And I’ll answer the most commonly asked question about Voice Acting for all you listeners…
HOW DO I GET INTO VOICE ACTING?
You get into it by getting your voice out there! And that starts with a microphone to record yourself. You can purchase either a USB or XLR mic, though XLRs are complicated at first and USBs like the Blue Yeti get the job done in my humble opinion. After that, do you have access to a closet full of old clothes or even some pillows and cushions to make a fort? If so, good! Hide inside it, set up a computer monitor, and congratulations you already have a makeshift sound booth that works surprisingly good.
When you’re starting out you don’t need to blow thousands of dollars or an extremely expensive Vocal Isolation booth, you can rent one out at Seneca@york to see how good they are (shameless plug for the Polytechnic institute), but don’t go out and buy one off the top. I will make a “caveat emptor” right here, getting into voice acting is absolutely no guarantee that you will ever see a penny from it, let alone a successful career in it. I’m still feeling fairly new at this and I’ve been voice acting for five years already.
Now comes the next step, you have a microphone, you have a basic voice booth…
How do you find work?
Try looking at Twitter or X as it’s now called, sometimes you can find hidden gold that gives new voice actors a shot with audition details and an email that they can send audio files to. If you’re looking at other websites and sources, Castingcallclub is part of how I got my start. YouTubers and content creators are ALWAYS looking for new talent.
I bought my first microphone in November 2020, motivated to try something out that I’ve always wanted to try in the wake of the first year of the pandemic. Look at me now, I’ve got more than a few voiceover credits to my name. Give it a try. You never know where it can take you.
