I’ve been feeling nostalgic for my childhood lately, so my friend scooter and I decided to rewatch my favourite childhood show ruby gloom. And I gotta say still holds up. All forty episodes are available on YouTube for free and compiled into one lovey little playlist for watcher convenience. Ruby gloom is about a young goth girl by the same name who lives in mansion with her monster friends, Iris the cyclops, Skull Boy the skeleton, Misery the banshee, and many more loveable characters. It being in production from 2003-2008 means there are one- or two-episodes people may take offence to due to some unsavoury cultural stereotypes, but the show keeps up with modern standards otherwise. The show was written for children with the parent watchers in mind, there are so many references to huge pop culture moments, movies, and other tv shows that just went right over my head as a kid. The music is also fantastic for being original and made just for the show, a sub plot is that the conjoined twin characters, Frank, and Len, are in a rock band together and are often the ones playing the music you hear in the show. Another bonus point for the show in my books is it’s all Canadian, the actors, animators, and producers all sourced here in the great white north. And you may be thinking that I’m just clouded by nostalgia and that’s why I think that you should watch a children’s television show, but my friend scooter had never seen it before. so, if you don’t want to take my word for it take theirs
“i’d say it’s of course nice to get to just be silly for a while but also i think it’s neat for a kids show not to shy away from things like death and fear. the bright side of the dark side indeed”
