Sequins, body shimmer, being stripped down to your underwear, aliens, and more. The Rocky Horror Picture Show has it all.
A cult classic film that’s been the subject of thousands of midnight theatre showings. Starting its life as a stage show in London the gritty film has captured the hearts of goths, punks, the LGBTQ+ community, and all lovers of the perverse. It is a musical with a great soundtrack that takes inspiration from rock music and a large part of the cast in the movie reprised their rolls from the stage including Tim Curry and Little Nell. Rocky Horror is not the kind of movie you want to watch with your conservative mother or put on in the background at the work Halloween party but is sure is a good time at the right time.
The first time I watched rocky horror with my parents I was 7 and while that’s not something I would recommend you do it certainly shaped my life. The grungy glitz and glamorous aliens of Transylvania are a few of the goth icons I shaped parts of my style after. And Janet Weiss utters some of my most quoted movie moments, my favourite being “I’m cold, and I’m wet, and I’m just plain scared!”
But I also love the stage play just as much, Frank n Furter has been one of my dream rolls since I learned I could sing that low. So, if you’re looking for a movie to add to your Halloween watchlist that includes back-to-back bangers, life like porcelain statues, implied cannibalism, and a few nips slips then The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the film for you. Now there is some discourse online where some people believe this movie is problematic. However, we need to look at it from the perspective of terminology changing over the years and take into consideration that only THREE YEARS before this movie was released you could be but in jail for being gay in London. This movie was very progressive at the time of its release and gave a generation of queer kids including myself and my mother the representation they’ve never seen before even if they’re aliens played by cis people. With all of that being said I hope we can all put on our critical thinking caps and watch Rocky horror this fall.
